Why not to Multitask?
MULTITASKING.
I have heard people say it's a great way to get a lot of things done. But, I can never ace it.
After some research, I found out that it hampers your productivity and concentration.
Waait wait...First, What is multitasking?
Multitasking is doing 2 or more things at the same time. It can be as simple as watching milk boil and checking your phone.
Since multitaskers keep shifting their focus between tasks, they have a hard time concentrating on one task.
I always keep my WhatsApp notification switched on. Even while writing this blog, I checked messages in between ie, constantly juggling between two very different things. That explains why I make so many mistakes (if u noticed it👀)
Imagine driving and you are constantly faced with an obstacle. You get angry and stressed, right? That's how our brain feels when it is constantly juggling between 2 or more things There is no free flow.
How does multitasking affect learning?
Student life is very hectic. Idk why teachers think we have no life other than assignments and college.
So multitasking seems like a good way to cross out some to-do lists. It is quite common that students to do work while talking, checking social media, or listening to music. But it can reduce their productivity by up to 40 percent.
How to prevent multitasking?
If you are prone to multitasking, I would advise you to make a to-do list and rate tasks on basis of priority and urgency. Then complete the most important tasks.
And slowly practice mindfulness.
What is being mindful?
Being mindful is observing things as it is without judging them as good or bad.
If we are feeling a certain way, it's better to accept and feel it rather than refrain from it.
Example: Think about the time you spent with your crush, you would be completely involved and be in the moment and lose track of time, right? That is what being mindful of.
Why be mindful?
We know we can't change past and future yet we think about them either in regret or anxiety. So if we focus on the present we can make better decisions and be less anxious or stressed.
How can I be mindful?
- Observe: For example: observe how you feel when you see a crush. Do you feel your heartbeat racing? or do you feel anxious?
- Describe: Describe what you see without attaching any emotion to it. Here, you see a pretty person who is funny and has a cute smile.
