 What is a superfood? Does it have powers? Did it come from krypton? I am just kidding. I was talking about superman (if you didn't get it)
A superfood is a food that is locally found and each part of the plant can be used and provides various micro-nutrients. You have might have seen celebrities eating quinoa, avocado, kale, kiwi, etc. They are not superfoods for India because: It has to travel from another country. So to prevent it from rotting, they add various chemicals which make it unhealthy. The reason why certain foods grow in certain areas is that the people living in that area need those nutrients that are found in their native region.

Here are some of superfoods that might be shocking to hear:
1. Ghee:


But is ghee fattening? It's quite the opposite, ghee burns fat. That's because ghee has SCFA(short-chain fatty acids) that provides body energy also aids in digestion. Ghee reduces the glycaemic index of food, so blood sugar levels don't rise so quickly. That means you don't crash after your meals. Plus ghee has a high smoking point, so it is used for deep frying too (a smoking point is a temperature at which fatty acids in oil get broken and it is not fit for consumption anymore).
Ghee can be used externally also: For example, it is put on the eyes before sleeping because the fat in ghee helps prevent dry eyes. If you are suffering from painful periods, drink hot water along with ghee. It helps to relieve pain. Pain in the uterus is caused due to dryness in the body, so ghee acts as a lubricant.
2. Banana


Banana is a superfood because all the parts of plant are used and bananas are always available and cheap too, compared to other fruits. It has potassium, fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, etc. Banana can be consumed both as a snack (which gives so much energy) and relives constipation. But does banana causes weight gain?
It is partly true. It can be consumed to gain as well as lose weight. When consumed with a pinch of pepper first thing in the morning, it helps in fat loss. When consumed with ghee and jaggery, it helps in weight gain. I have already mentioned, food is more than just calories. It's not about how much you eat, it is about the combination of food that causes weight gain or loss.
Banana is a superfood because of its versatility in use:



Banana stem: It is used to make sabzi/curry. My mom used to make soup with it. It's tasty plus it helps to heal the kidney.
Banana leaf: It is used as a plate in marriages and Indian feasts. It is biodegradable, eco friendly plus it adds a unique taste to food which is due to polyphenols in the banana leaf. It raises blood sugar levels in a steady manner, so you don't feel sleepy after a meal.



 Raw banana(green ) -From making curry to chips to bajji, it serves every occasion. It has the amino acid tryptophan, which reduces mood swings and also provides good sleep. It is indeed a superfood, isn't it?

3. Coconut


 

Every good occasion starts with breaking coconut. It is seen as a good sign. It gives us coconut water which is derived from saltwater but it converts it into sweet. Coconut has medium-chain triglycerides which are found in breast milk. The malai found in coconut is a coolant to the body and solves stomach issues. The MCT(Medium-chain triglycerides) will help cut down the risk of cholesterol. The lauric acid in coconut is not just good for the heart but also helps burn fat. The lauric acid and the other fatty acids in the coconut creates satiety. That’s why in India you garnish food with coconut. It improves taste and prevents overeating. 4. Jackfruit-They say "Don't judge a book by its cover". A thing that seems dangerous from the outside can be sweet from the inside.

Let me prove to you why Jackfruit is a superfood:
Leaves: In some states, foods are wrapped in jackfruit leaves which enhances the taste as well as improves immunity.
Raw jackfruit is used to make biriyani which gives taste and texture like a meat biriyani.
Ripe jackfruit: Obviously, it can be eaten directly. It's so sweet that you can't stop eating. It is so delicious. It helps in maintaining the health of the gall bladder and colon.
Seeds: In my house, seeds are saved and later made into sambar. It is surprisingly sweet. It is rich in vitamin B
Throny skin: It is fed to pregnant cows that improve their milk quality.
