Why having no periods is a problem?
Talking about periods is taboo in India. I am glad that now period ads are slowly evolving to show blood.๐ฉธ๐ฌ
Even then,
Most of us talk about cramps, tiredness, pimples, cravings, etc.
I bet 80% of you don't even know/heard about HA.
Many girls deal with it silently.
If talking about periods is taboo. It is not surprising that there aren't many studies done on menstruation.
So, you might ask,
What the hell is hypothalamic amenorrhea(HA)? ๐
It is losing normal menstruation for three consecutive months or more.
There is also PCOS/PCOD(but that is for another day)
How is it caused?
It is a combination of eating low calories and stress
Physical stress is like exercising a lot.๐ช
Mental stress means too much worrying, work stress, etc.๐
It seems fun to lose it since you don't have to deal with staining, cramps, or buying sanitary products.๐
So why should we worry about it?
Even though periods are no fun
Not having periods is not a good sign for your body's health.
๐ฆด It leads to a decrease in bone density.
Estrogen helps to develop bone cells.
↓ estrogen= ↓ bone density= high risk of fracture in later years
๐ It can cause cardiovascular disease
↓ estrogen= ↑ cholesterol= cardiovascular disease
๐ Problems with digestion
digestion becomes slow=more water gets reabsorbed into bloodstream=constipation/gas/bloating
๐Brittle hair
↓ estrogen=hair thinning=easy for breakage
So how to get it back?
The simple answer is
๐ฒ Increase in food intake-more carbs and fats
๐บ Reduce exercise(limit to walking)
Why because,
When you are underweight and are eating less, it causes stress to your body. You don't want to put more strain on your body by training.
It feels easy to say. "EAT MORE"
But it's more physiological.
For people eating fewer calories, it feels scary to increase calories as it causes fat gain๐
(Actually, that's the point. You have to come to a body set weight to function normally)
A lot of doctors recommend pills to get back periods๐
That's the wrong advice! Why?
The pill is just mimicking the period.
Having a period that way doesn't mean your body's health is fine.
